Pudlo Pudlat

Pudlo was born in February 1916, at Ilupirulik camp, near Amadjuak which is approximately 350 km east of Kinngait [Cape Dorset], Qikiqtaaluk [Baffin Island], Nunavut. He is best known for the 4500 graphic works (prints, drawings, paintings) he produced during a 33-year period. He began his career carving sculpture but was dissatisfied with this endeavor and, upon his return to Kiaktuuq camp, he began drawing around 1959 or 1960.

Initially encouraged by James Houston and then by Terry Ryan, he quickly recognized drawing, and later printmaking and painting, as his media of choice. Pudlo's last prints appear in the annual Cape Dorset Print collection and catalogue in 1993.

He died on December 28, 1992.
